Today we’re getting to know Lynn Seyffarth, Backend Engineer in our SRE/Developer Experience team. Lynn has been part of Freenow for six years, growing from a working student to a full-time engineer. She’s driven by curiosity, creativity, and the constant opportunity to learn and make an impact.
Thanks for joining us today! To break the ice, what’s something unique or surprising about you that most people don’t know?
I don’t know if it’s especially unique or surprising, but I really enjoy crocheting and knitting. I love making clothes and accessories for myself and the people around me. Besides going to the gym, there's nothing more calming for me than creating something pretty that I can wear or gift to someone.
Can you take us through your background and what brought you to Freenow?
I first studied Computer Science and Electrical Engineering but later switched to a Bachelor’s in International Management. During that time, I worked in Controlling in Italy, but I soon realized it wasn’t technical or number-driven enough for me. Since I’ve always been drawn to math and logic, I decided to return to my technical roots and pursued a Master’s in Business Computer Science.
During that time, I joined Freenow as a working student and gained my first hands-on experience in Software Engineering. That was six years ago. After completing my Master’s, it was clear to me that I wanted to stay at Freenow. I felt at home here and appreciated the chance to explore different areas while remaining in a familiar environment.
Today, I work as a Backend Engineer in the SRE/Developer Experience team, where I’m constantly exposed to new and exciting opportunities. Our team focuses on improving the platform and microservices, from incident management, observability, and alerting to various engineering projects. The work is never monotonous; there’s always something to optimize and learn.
What makes your role both challenging and exciting?
What makes my role exciting is that I learn something new every day. Because our team’s responsibilities are so diverse, there’s always a fresh challenge that keeps me on my toes, and I really enjoy that. I like the mix of engineering and coding combined with managing incident response tools and security scanning. It’s rewarding to take responsibility for a wide range of tools and services while continuously developing new skills.
Another aspect I truly value is the communication with other teams and stakeholders. Since we also provide support and establish baselines for other development teams, we’re in close contact with many different people and perspectives. I really enjoy this exchange and the opportunity to collaborate across teams.
What do you appreciate most about working at Freenow?
Definitely the people. I’ve never met so many generous, interesting, and supportive colleagues in one place. Whether you need help with something or just want to have a chat in the kitchen or at an office event, everyone is approachable and genuinely interested in connecting. That’s something really special about Freenow and one of the main reasons I’ve stayed here for so many years.
I also really value the open-minded culture across all levels. Sharing opinions and ideas isn’t just accepted but actively encouraged and appreciated, which makes it easy to contribute and feel heard.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining Freenow?
Be excited, be open, and be yourself. It really pays off at Freenow. The company values individuality and curiosity, so if you bring your authentic self and stay open to learning and connecting with others, you’ll not only grow but also feel at home here.
Lynn’s journey shows how curiosity and a love for learning can shape a fulfilling career. Her story is a reminder of how much growth can happen when you’re surrounded by supportive people and an open-minded culture!
