Today we’re excited to introduce Fabian Neugart, Principal Android Engineer at Freenow. Fabian joined us in 2017 and has grown into a key figure in shaping how our driver app evolves. Beyond his technical expertise, he also has some surprising personal quirks and habits that make his story one you’ll want to read!
Thanks for finding the time to chat with us, Fabian! First, to get to know you better, what’s a surprising fact about yourself that most people might not know?
The weird one: I have an ick on badly shaped or unbalanced cutlery. The less weird one: I stopped traveling by airplane 5 years ago.
Can you walk us through your career journey and how you came to Freenow?
No surprises here. I did my Bachelor in Business Informatics. Since the whole study experience was in partnership with a big IT company, it allowed me to go for an internship in Silicon Valley, for which I'm really grateful until this day. The tech landscape is just something you can't experience in Europe.
I joined Freenow pretty soon afterwards in 2017 in Barcelona as an Android Engineer. Today, I'm a Principal Android Engineer in the Supply domain where we take care that everything around the driver app is working as expected and product improvements make it into the app.
What makes your role both challenging and exciting?
That could probably be a whole list, but let me just share two general ones. First, keeping the complexity of everything we build and need to maintain under control is definitely a major challenge. There are tons of things hidden under the interface that the end user would see.
And secondly, engaging everyone in the Android chapter, meaning the group of all Android engineers, to bring in their own ideas and iterate together on those is probably one of the most exciting parts of this role.
What do you enjoy most about working at Freenow?
I can approach and ask anyone, and I really mean anyone, working here for help or support in brainstorming on an issue. There is a genuine spirit of teamwork and enthusiasm to fix problems that really feels unique.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining Freenow?
If you like working in a place that’s always evolving and enjoy tackling challenges together with others, Freenow is a great place to be
Thanks to Fabian for giving us a glimpse into his journey! His story shows how passion and teamwork fuel innovation at Freenow. Keep an eye out for our next People blogs!
