Add your driving licence and ID

Before you can get behind the steering wheel, you’ll need to add in your residential address along with your driving licence, ID and fiscal ID to use Free2move carsharing. It’s super quick and easy to authorise them – just follow the instructions on screen when starting a rental and you’ll be ready to drive in no time. Plus, you’ll only need to verify your details once and you’ll be able to access all our services. Just a little reminder that for now we can only accept your national EU ID cards, passports or residence permits.

For safety reasons, you’ll need to have more than 1 year of driving experience.

Please also note that currently Free2move accepts the driving licence from the following countries. No worries if you haven’t found yours - we are working on increasing the list.

If you’ve already validated some of your documents with FREENOW for one of our other services, just add the missing ones and you’re ready to go :)

Find and unlock

Find the nearest Free2move car on the in-app map, then slide to start your reservation.

Once you slide, you’ve got some time to start your rental – that means it’s easy for you to cancel if you change your mind during that time. Bear in mind that after that time passes, your reservation will expire. Please note that you can reserve a single vehicle only once in two hours.

Once you’re next to the car and ready, tap “Start rental” and the vehicle will be automatically unlocked. Jump in, follow the checks below and you’re good to go.

Getting road ready

Once you’ve unlocked, here’s what you need to check before hitting the open road...

  1. Check if your car has any marks or damages – this is super unlikely, but if it happens, slide the renting details card up from the bottom of your screen and contact the Free2move team via the “Help” button.
  2. Open the Free2move car and get the key out of the compartment box. Then use it to turn on the car.
  3. If your car is low on fuel – open the glove compartment where you’ll find a special Shell Fuel Card. We’ll share the PIN with you in the app. You’ll need to fill the car at “Q8” gas stations only.
  4. If you decide to rent an electric car, please have a look at the electric charging level of the chosen car to make sure you have enough capacity for your trip before starting the rental, as currently charging for electric vehicles is not supported during the rental period.
  5. That’s it! Mirror, signal and hit the road.

Safety is key

  • Be attentive: watch out for other vehicles, always be focused on and aware of your surroundings, traffic and pedestrians.
  • Please obey local traffic and parking laws.
  • Never drink and drive. If you need to get home after a drink or two, feel free to take a taxi – they’re in the first tab of the FREENOW app, whenever you need them.
  • If an emergency happens on your way (we hope not, but forewarned is forearmed), please slide the renting details card up and contact the Free2move team via the “Help” button in the bottom of the screen.

Ending your rental

To end your trip, park the car inside the business area marked on the map in the designated parking zone. Local authorities may charge you a fine if you don’t follow these parking rules, so keep an eye out for signs and notices.

You may also park your car in special drop-off zones (marked black in the app), but please be aware that an extra cost between 2,99€ and 7,99€ could be applied depending on the area.

Make sure you have an internet connection to end your rental - Free2move cars should not be parked in underground garages or car parks.

Turn off the engine, put the key into the compartment box and check if you’ve taken all your valuables from the car. Close all the windows, trunk and doors. Open the app and tap the ‘End rental’ button.

We’ll send the cost split for your trip to you via email.
